Horse Brooch - silver brooch
Made in Norway

The original was a horse buckle cast in bronze and found at Hedrum near the Viking town Kaupang. The horse in a canter with a curved neckline indicates that it belongs to the family of north European horse figures from 700-800 AD. The horse is important in the Viking mythology, blood and meat from horse was often used during religious celebrations. The horse was sometimes even buried together with its owner. Horse figures were used as amulets for their magical powers, this buckle may have had such a function.
